Subject: Aikido-L Seminar Review [0/5]
Hi everyone,
I just came back from this year's Aikido-L Seminar and I thought I'd
share my experiences from it.
Introduction
For the past two years, the Aikido-L Mailing List has held a big
seminar in the United States for getting people on the List together
for training and having fun. The first Seminar in 1998 was held at
the Texas Aikikai in San Antonio and last year's Seminar in 1999 was
at the Virginia Ki Society in Merrifield, Virginia.
First, people on the List with access to a dojo or other
aikido-enabled facility step forward to host the Seminar at their
location. The location is then determined by a public vote on the
List. From here, the actual date is also put to a vote according to
the dates when the dojo will be available. Through this voting
process, the Seminar can be attended by the maximum number of people
who can attend it. The intructors are then chosen from people on the
List (with the addition of the "host" instructor being asked to open
up the event with a class of their own) who have had teaching
responsibilites in the past. Unlike other events, none of the
organizers nor teachers make any money from the Seminar nor are
compensated for their travel and such; any surplus funds become routed
toward the organization of the next Seminar itself. In past seminars,
we have had teachers from USAF, ASU, Ki Society, Yoshinkai,
Jiyushinkai, and other organizations and affiliations.
This year, we held the votes and selected the instructors and ended up
with the Seminar being held at Boulder Aikikai in Boulder, Colorado on
October 7th and 8th. The featured instructors this year were Philip
Akin Sensei (5th dan, Yoshinkai Aikido Canada Headquarters), Alan
Drysdale Sensei (4th dan, Enmei Dojo), Julian Frost Sensei
(Fukushidoin, USAF-WR), Chuck Gordon (Renshi (Chuden), The Dojo), and
Hiroshi Ikeda Sensei (7th dan, Boulder Aikikai).
The Seminar this year was dedicated to the memory of Norma Simcox.
